Synopsis: Find the heir, win the crown.
The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers.
Win the crown, save the kingdom.
Rumored to be the heir, Grey has been on the run since he destroyed Lilith. He has no desire to challenge Rhen--until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother’s violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?
The heart-pounding, compulsively readable saga continues as loyalties are tested and new love blooms in a kingdom on the brink of war.
In the sequel to New York Times bestselling A Curse So Dark and Lonely, Brigid Kemmerer returns to the world of Emberfall in a lush fantasy where friends become foes and love blooms in the darkest of places.
Review:
This book has been sitting on my shelf since it's release earlier this year and I finally managed to pick it up about a month before the final book releases in January. And I am so glad I picked it up when I did.
The book picks up right where we left off, and there is unrest in the Kingdom of Emberfall as rumours spread that Rhen is not the rightful heir to the throne and Grey is missing after the battle against Lilith.
I really enjoyed having a book from Grey's perspective this time around as he was one of my favourite characters from the first book. You follow Grey as he struggles to come to terms with the fact the he may have to face off against Rhen for the crown, something which he has never wanted.
The reader is also introduced to Lia Mara from the enemy kingdom threatening to take Emberfall by force. I adored Lia Mara as a character. She is a character who is always questioning her decisions and who grows immensely as the story progresses. I loved not only her interactions with Grey, but the other characters as well. I found I enjoyed the relationship with her and Grey more than I did with Harper and Rhen in the first one.
The epilogue left me very excited to see how everything goes down in the final book which is out late January.
