A strange darkness grows in Allward.
Even Corayne an-Amarat can feel it, tucked away in her small town at the edge of the sea.
She soon discovers the truth: She is the last of an ancient lineage—and the last hope to save the world from destruction. But she won’t be alone. Even as darkness falls, she is joined by a band of unlikely companions:
A squire, forced to choose between home and honor.
An immortal, avenging a broken promise.
An assassin, exiled and bloodthirsty.
An ancient sorceress, whose riddles hide an eerie foresight.
A forger with a secret past.
A bounty hunter with a score to settle.
Together they stand against a vicious opponent, invincible and determined to burn all kingdoms to ash, and an army unlike anything the realm has ever witnessed.
Review:
Having been a fan of Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen series, i was very excited to learn about the first book in her new series.
But did it live up to the hype?
For the most part yes.
What I loved most about this book is the world building. Victoria Aveyard has always been a favourite author due to the complex worlds she creates and the world of Realm Breaker is no exception. You are immediately drawn into the complex world with queens, assassins, magicians and pirates, along with the magical elements of the story.
The characters in this book are as every bit intriguing as the world. There are 5 main characters who we meet and follow throughout the story. I enjoyed the relationship that the main characters have as the story progresses and I'm interested to see how they grow in the next instalment.
The main issue I had with this book was with the slow pace of the plot. After the thrilling introduction, it took about 200 pages before the story started to pick up in pace again. This along with the multiple perspectives, while I enjoyed seeing more than one point of view dragged the book on for a little too long.
I'm looking forward to what the next instalment brings.
